English 256: Desktop Publishing (Spring 2015)

Course Catalog Description:
An introduction to desktop publishing and fundamentals of design, including layout, formatting, imaging, and publishing. Assignments will include letterhead design, brochures, manuals, newsletters, and web pages using desktop publishing software and equipment.

Course Goals and Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Apply principles of communication and graphic design theories in the design and production of a project that is appropriate to its purpose and its audience.
  • Use Adobe InDesign CS6 and appropriate software to produce such print media as text documents, business communication and advertising packages, and news and product publications.
  • Create, write, and edit a WordPress blog (topic choice up to the student) that showcases the student’s interests and writing talents. Topic must be professionally appropriate.
  • Create a website using WordPress, Wix, or another platform to showcase portfolio work and blog.

Projects:
Students will complete five projects in this course. Each print project will be exported as a PDF and saved in your class turnitin folder.

  • Project One: Résumé
  • Project Two: Advertising Package: Business Card and Postcard
  • Project Three: Magazine Cover
  • Project Four: Tri-fold Brochure
  • Project Five (Final Exam Project): Personal website with revised projects and blog with a minimum of 8 posts. You will create your blog portion of this assignment at the beginning of the semester and post regularly. You will also include a screencast tutorial and writing sample.
