Course Description:
In this survey of British literature, we will examine works of literature from Beowulf to the Restoration. While this course will introduce you to a wide range of literature from the eighth to the eighteenth century, our focus will not only be on the chronology of the works, but also on each work’s setting. We will analyze each piece of literature’s treatment of audience and setting—is the narrative structured around a journey metaphor or does the work interrogate or idealize a particular place in time? Along with examining how “setting” functions within each work, we will also learn about where the writers of the works composed their poetry, prose, or drama; where and how that piece was transcribed and published; and how readers of various time periods have accessed each work. Ultimately, while we will be using The Norton Anthology of English Literature, I will challenge you to see these works as separate entities instead of an established part of the British literary canon.
